How To: Widening Your Blogger Layout

It's time for another How To! This time I am showing you how to widen your layout to accommodate larger photos, and a wider posting space. The end of the tutorial shows you how to install a banner and background from Beautify My Blog. So just ignore that part (unless you feel like updating your look, of course).

When you view the video, zoom your screen in a few times to be able to see the HTML code better. You just go up to View>Zoom In at the top of your computer.

Your tutorial was so helpful! Where did you get the code for the background image?

This was great! I thought the tutorial was really easy to follow.

I have a follow-up question for you. I have a background by Knuckleheaders. When I take it off, the blog looks fine with everything widened. When I put it back on, the background is too narrow, and overlaps the posting space & sidebar. Is there anything I can do to widen those also?

Thanks again!

To answer questions so far:
• My background codes are purchased through my blog design company, Beautify My Blog. I sell premade one-of-a-kind themes. Visit www.beautifymyblog.com for more on that. OR you can find free backgrounds out and about. Check the Resources link on Beautify My Blog for more on free design sites.
• To widen a background (Kristen), that would have to be widened in Photoshop. One thing to do is e-mail the original designer, and ask her to widen the background design for you. The other idea would be for me to take a screen shot of your background, then go in and fix it in Photoshop for you. I charge a small fee for that. E-mail me if you want more info!

I had a friend ask about this today so I'm sending her over to figure it out.

Thank you so much for doing this. I've been looking online trying to figure out for the life of me how to do this. I just did it and it was super easy.

I think you mentioned that you make larger images by changing the pixel size in the HTML code. It seem that you lose the image quality when you do this. I copy and paste out of photobucket. Is there an easier way?

Sara—
When uploading photos, you don't necessarily have to go through Photobucket. I upload straight from my files off of my computer. If they are looking fuzzy or pixelated, chances are you are uploading a photo that isn't high enough resolution. I save all of my photos as 4x6 at 300dpi to make sure they are a nice resolution. And it could also be a freak happening when you upload from Photobucket...

Hi Lyndsay,

I love all your tutorials, thanks soo much! So informative and your style is just so beautiful and fresh! :) Now I just have to freshen up my blogs!

How do you get your frames around the photos?

Which version of Photoshop are you using?

Greetings from Sweden,
Senja

Thank you so much for posting this! I had tried to figure it out on my own and my layout has been wider but also kind of wonky ever since. Now it's pretty!

I just received a link to your blog and did this. I do have a question, however. What if you don't want a border? What would you need to change so there are no margins?

Sincerely,
Lizzy

I just did this on my blog! Thank you so much. I had two windows open while I worked on it. It was like having one of my girlfriend's walk me through it. Thanks for your generosity in sharing it.

Thank you so much for sharing. One question though... why do my widgets get put at the very bottom of the page and not allow me to move them up?
